History was created on this date. MS Dhoni became the only captain in the world to win all ICC accolades( ICC WT20, ICC CWC and ICC Champions Trophy). He guided India to lift its second Champions Trophy.
It was 23rd June, 2013; rainy day in Edgbaston Cricket Ground, Birmingham, England. Due to rain the game was of 20 overs only. Men in Blues’ captain MS Dhoni lost the toss; and was invited to bat first by; The England team’s captain – Alastair Cook.
Indian opener Rohit Sharma was; dismissed early by Stuart Broad; but his partner; Shikhar Dhawan looked good and scored; 31 runs off 24 balls before being dismissed by Ravi Bopara. Dinesh Karthik, Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni; disappointed as none of them got past 10 runs. Indian team scored 129 runs.
Virat Kohli was the highest run scorer; scoring 43 runs; though we will have to also acknowledge the innings of Ravindra Jadeja who played a cameo of 33 runs off 25 balls in last overs of Indian innings.
England’s Ravi Bopara got 3 scalps. Anderson, Tredwell and Broad got 1 wicket each.

England’s chase
England needed 130 runs to win the match. The Englishmen started poorly. Their top-order failed miserably. Their captain Sir Alastair Cook was dismissed by Umesh Yadav; Ian Bell was Jonathan Trott were the victims of quick stumping of Dhoni( wickets were took by Jadeja am=nd Ashwin respectively).
England found themselves on the backfoot; as they had lost four 4 wickets in mere nine overs. Then, Eoin Morgan and Ravi Bopara’s partnership started to give India a headache. A partnership that lasted almost 10 overs; was finally broken by Ishant Sharma who dismissed Eoin Morgan in 18th over. On the next ball; he also dismissed Bopara. Morgan scored 33 runs and Bopara scored 30 runs.
On the last ball of the match; James Tredwell was on strike. England needed 6 runs to win the trophy. But Tredwell failed to do so. And celebrations rejoiced in the Indian camp.

It was India’s 2nd ICC Champions Trophy championship after the 2002 ICC Champions Trophy. But they had to share the honour with Sri Lanka since this was a joint championship winning. So this was the first time when India won that designation individually. In integration India became the second team after Australia to win the ICC Champions Trophy more than one time.
Man of the match was Ravindra Jadeja who took 2 wickets and scored 33 runs. In addition, India also won Golden Bat. The recipient of Golden Bat was Shikhar Dhawan who scored 338 runs.
Hail Team India 🙂
